Olympic volunteer programmes launch as two-year countdown begins
The London 2012 Olympic Games will begin in two years, on 27 July 2012.
On 27 July this year, LOCOG (The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games) launched London 2012's official volunteer programme. LOCOG will be recruiting up to 70,000 volunteers (called Games Makers) to help the Olympics and Paralympics happen.
Applications will be accepted for most volunteer roles from 15 September. But people with a learning disability can apply now, with support from Mencap, working in partnership with LOCOG.
The Mayor of London's London Ambassadors scheme, which is looking for a separate group of 8,000 volunteers, also launched on 27 July. Mencap is also working to support people with a learning disability to apply to become volunteers through this scheme.
