Mencap Sport believes that people with a learning disability should have the same opportunities to participate, enjoy and excel in sport at all levels.

What do we do?

Mencap Sport is a sports consultancy promoting the inclusion of people with a learning disability in sport.

We work with, train and support sporting organisations to make their services accessible and campaign and lobby for better provision. We also organise an expensive programme of national championship events, and support talented athletes to compete in international competition.

Each year, sport benefits from a huge investment by government, and we work hard to ensure that sports organisations who deliver sport - at school, in the community, or in competition  - are inclusive of people with a learning disability.

We do this by:

• advising on inclusion policies
• providing training and advice
• campaigning and lobbying.

We work in partnership with organisations across the country including the national governing bodies of sport, government, and charities such as Special Olympics.

In addition, we manage a programe of sports delivery, including national championship events and a programme to identify and support gifted and talented athletes with a learning disability as they train towards and compete in international competition.   

Where do we work?

We work across England, and work in partnership with organisations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Supporting INAS-FID

INAS-FID is the International Federation for learning disability sport and the member of the International Paralympic Committee representing learning disability. It manages learning disability sport worldwide, including a programme of World Championship competition.

In 2007, Mencap was chosen by INAS-FID to host its international office and Secretariat. This is based at the Mencap Sport offices.
