Angie moves off benefits into full-time work

AngieAngie Wheeler is 23 years old and had been claiming benefit for some time but wanted to get a job.

She discussed what help was available with the Disability Employment Adviser at her local Jobcentre and was referred to Mencap.

After finding out about Angie's interests, abilities and the kind of work she would like to do, Mencap contacted a local Four Seasons Health Care home and arranged a job interview. Angie was a little nervous but Mencap gave her support and she received some funds from the Jobcentre to buy new clothes for the interview.

Angie's interview went well and a trial period was organised so that she could try the job out before deciding if it was right for her. This also went well and the care home offered Angie the job, which she accepted.

Angie is now working full time and still receives support from Mencap when she needs it. She receives some ‘in work' benefits and has more money now than she did before she started work.

Both Angie and her employer are happy. Angie is very pleased that she now has a worthwhile job which has increased her confidence and independence - and she has more money to spend.
