Steven is 16 years old and has a learning disability. He always wanted to work in the local tyre recovery business near his home in Tudhoe, County Durham.
Steven contacted Bishop Auckland College on leaving school to discuss courses that would help him reach his goal of paid work. He was enrolled on aim2work, a supported employment qualification delivered in partnership with Mencap.
This combined work experience as a tyre fitter at the local garage with course work to develop his skills. Steven learnt essential skills to help him get the most from his job such as following instructions and routines, communication and managing responsibility. To improve his numeracy and literacy, Mencap helped him to enrol on an open access course at the college.
Steven worked hard and achieved so much that his employer offered him paid employment of 32 hours a week as an assistant tyre fitter.
Steven gained a City & Guilds Skills for Work qualification at Entry Level 3 and continues to be supported by Mencap in the workplace.
