When Jason was 18 years old he moved out of his parents' house and into a 24 hour residential house. Whilst living there Jason completed a 2 year course called ‘Towards independence' at a local college.
As Jason got older his desire for independence also grew stronger and with support from Mencap's personal support and housing staff Jason was finally able to move into a flat on his own. Jason received 6 hours of support per week and had the peace of mind of having a 24 hour on-call service. In the building where Jason lived, 4 of the other flats were occupied by Mencap tenants. Jason enjoyed his time in his flat.
Jason is now 30 years old and now works at Morrissons for 3 hours per week in the staff canteen. Jason enjoys having a job and gets on well with the staff at Morrisons.
Living alone in his flat gave Jason the confidence to try something different and in 2007 he became aware of the opportunity to part own his own house. Jason applied and was accepted by Advanced Housing for the scheme, and now lives in a lovely 2 bedroom house with his Cairn terrier puppy called ‘Pickles'.
Jason has gained great independence and now only receives 2 hours of support each week. Mencap continues to support Jason.
