Paul learns new skills in supported living

After many years of living with other people Paul moved in to his own flat last year.

He has settled in to the local community well and has learned, for the first time in his life, many new skills such as cooking and managing his own money. 

In order to ensure that Paul could be as independent and safe as possible, his flat has been fully equipped with specialist devices, and includes both a telephone and doorbell that are specific to his sensory impairment. Since moving into his own flat Paul is really excited to learn that he has qualified for a hearing dog, which is now being trained for, and with, him.

Paul has always loved anything to do with Native American culture and since moving into his flat he has put together an extensive collection of dream catchers and other related memorabilia. Paul also likes collecting driftwood from local beaches which he uses to decorate mirrors.

Since moving into his own flat, Paul has been able to increase his choices and independence, and when not at home he enjoys travelling by bus to local places of interest, car boot sales, bingo and line dancing.

By having the opportunity to move into supported living Paul is finally able to live the life he wants and chooses, and with full support from Mencap's personal support and housing support workers he has every chance to be positive about his future.
